8/15/2023 0 Comments Dragon keeper 2 lizardThe background temperature should range from about 78 to 85 degrees Farenheit, on a gradient. Your frilled dragon requires a basking spot of 95-100 degrees Farenheit. A 12 hour on/12 hour off cycle is recommended by this keeper when not attempting to breed.Īlways use a bulb guard in conjunction with any lighting fixtures inside the vivarium to avoid burns to your animal. Follow the manufacturer’s advice and replace the bulb when advised. UVB light is essential to help your lizard produce Vitamin D3 and break down Calcium. Cedar and pine beddings should be avoided as they are toxic to reptiles. If you choose to use sand, it may be possible to feed your lizard outside of the vivarium. Sand is more aesthetically pleasing, but can be ingested and cause impaction. Newspaper or paper towels are useful for bedding. It takes approximately three years to attain adult size. Some males reach three feet in length, but this is mostly tail. The frilled dragon can be found in Northern and Eastern Australia, and in New Guinea. These dragons may live up to 15 years in captivity, and are diurnal (active during the day) Females are reputed as being much more skittish than males, and this would be my experience. They possess larger femoral pores, which are situated in the thigh area. Males become larger, with significantly larger heads and larger and more colourful frills. This is only extended when a lizard is startled, alerted or in defensive or aggressive mode, and causes the lizard to look larger than it actually is.įrilled Dragons are difficult to sex (without x-ray) until mature. The most recognisable feature of a frilled dragon is, of course, the frill. The majority of the lizard’s length is comprised of tail, which contributes to its climbing prowess. Most are of grey to brown colouration, with various tones of rusty red/orange/brown present in the frill, which is said to vary depending on the locality and sex of a particular lizard. I also have seen V.s.macromaculatus with het-melanism being sold as "patterned black dragon" or "low grade black-dragon" as well so unless we can compare behavior of it as adult I can't really be sure that individual is V.s.komaini or V.s.macromaculatus (assuming they are distinct in the first place that is).The frilled dragon is a medium sized arboreal lizard. Interestingly enough one of the keeper told me that Black dragon also have black hemipenes as well though he does not know the color in V.s.macromaculatus and melanistic V.s.macromaculatus, So far I learned that there are two color possible so far, dark purple and black tongue, whether this is individual variation or traits of subspecies I am not certain though. If tongue color can be used to predict size and behavior than it could be starting point to distinguish them (assuming I am correct about them being distinct) That is what I am hoping for actually, Those in captivity in western sphere (which I assume is where most redditers are) are more likely going to be melanistic V.s.macromaculatus as most of them I have seen posted grow much too large than what I am used to.Īlso it is the reason I asked about their size and growth rate as well as their arboreal behavior,
